On the one hand, an administrative hub

A small team of paid staff (see below), aided by a group of dedicated volunteers, facilitate the day-to-day running of Club business, from processing new memberships and administering funding applications, to coordinating special birdwatching events, like the SOC Annual Conference, and the quarterly mailing to members.

HQ supports the multitude of volunteers around the country who are the essence of the Club – running the 15 local branches, gathering vital bird records out in the field, assimilating data, producing the quarterly members’ journal, Scottish Birds, and compiling regional bird reports.

On the other, a resource centre, events venue and wildlife art gallery

Waterston House attracts over 10,000 visitors each year. Many are art enthusiasts, drawn in by the programme of exhibitions by leading wildlife artists. Others, birdwatchers, drop in to try out our range of optical equipment on offer, or to browse our second-hand books. A major section of the centre is given over to an extensive library, an invaluable research facility, which boasts over 5,000 books and journals from across the globe.

Other resources can be purchased in the small headquarters shop and include field guides, bird food & feeders, artists’ books and a range of cards and gift ideas.
